French Property Tax on Second Homes - who pays and why?

There has been a lot of discussion over the last few weeks about a possible additional tax for those with holiday homes in France, however, after it was passed by the National Assembly last week, after representation by a number of French MPs to Monsieur Sarkozy last Saturday he has decided not to proceed with this tax.

However, if you are not a resident of the EU with an EU passport then there is a little activated property tax on your second home in France. In practice we hardly ever hear about this being uses, but essentially it was this tax that was to be extended to all those non-residents, including the French, on their second homes.

We are still inestigating the position for non-EU people with second homes in France, and will update this page if we get further information.
